    This canvas is influenced by two important painters, Patrick Heron and
    Elsworth Kelly. The wonderful sensuous shape is borrowed from Kelly and the concept of taking a colour and surrounding it with another colour, thus producing a unique harmonic, something that each colour on its own would not produce, is Patrick Heron’s. Patrick was a good friend, and clearly this experiment was inspired by my spending time in his studio overlooking Porthmeor Beach at
    St Ives. Porthmeor is now the site of The Tate St. Ives, where many of Patrick’s paintings can be seen.
